According to sources, the New York Mets are hiring former St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach Jeff Albert as Director of Hitting.

Albert informed the Cardinals organization that he would not return at the end of the 2022 season, citing personal reasons, taking into account what’s best for his family and ability to pursue other challenges & opportunities.

per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak, was quoted as saying “I was hopeful he would come back, but ... there was a lot of frustration. (Albert) took a lot of the blame when things weren’t going well. I was prepared to offer him a contract, but before I even got that out of my mouth, he already had told me he was not coming back.

“If you read social media, a lot of people put a lot of blame on him.”

So while Jeff Albert may not have actually came out and said that he couldn’t handle the criticism or that it bothered him, it surely was implied to have played a factor. Something that if was the case, seems that heading to a New York market whose fanbase may be even more relentless wouldn’t be a perfect fit. However, Albert was born & raised in Rochester, NY, so this will be a homecoming of sorts for him.

Albert, 41, served as a hitting coach in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system for five years (2008-2012) and then joined the Astros as a minor league hitting instructor in 2013. He returned to St. Louis in 2019 when he was named the Cardinals hitting coach, replacing Mark Budaska who had held the position on an interim basis.

After the 2021 season, the Cardinals decided to move on from then manager Mike Shildt for “philosophical differences”, that some speculate was in part due to not being on the same page as Albert. The organization sided with Jeff and his analytical approach, which spoke to how much they valued his process.

The Cardinals had a collective .252/.325/.420 slashline in 2022 with 1,386 hits, 290 doubles, 21 triples, 197 HRs & 739 RBI during the regular season under Jeff Albert.

“Jeff accomplished exactly what we were hoping he would do,” Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said at a news presser last month. “He modernized our hitting program, our strategy. He made a huge contribution to our minor league side. From that standpoint, it was a success.”
