Matt Holliday Discusses Thoughts on Cardinals Bench Coach Vacancy

On Monday morning, Cardinals HOFer Matt Holliday joined the radio show “Hot Take Central” and explained that he may be interested in discussing the recent bench coach vacancy of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Hot Take Central airs on 590 the Fan, every morning from 7am - 10am with hosts Charlie Marlow, Cam Janssen & Jim “The Cat” Hayes. You can listen to today’s episode here: https://widget.spreaker.com/player?episode_id=51739393&playlist=show&cover_image_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd
After some typical joking around between Jim & Matt, Hayes asked Holliday if there was any interest on his part to fill Skip Schumaker’s position as bench coach for the Cardinals. Schumaker was recently hired by the Miami Marlins for their manager opening. Holliday responded with saying that he wasn’t sure, and that he hadn’t spoke with John Mozeliak… yet, but that he thinks there’s a chance that he does meet with Mo & Oliver Marmol to see what that might look like, to be part of the organization at least in “some capacity”.
He wouldn’t give a definitive yes or no in his interest, but did go on to say when asked, that if he did have plans to one day manage, that he’d prefer the bench coach role as opposed to hitting coach, but would like to be hands on with the offensive philosophy.
Hayes later tweeted about the conversation…

Holliday has been serving as an outfield/hitting coach for the Oklahoma State Cowboys under his brother, head coach Josh Holliday who’s been with the university since the 2013 season. Matt’s son Jackson Holliday was recently selected #1 overall in the 2022 MLB Draft and with having 3 other younger children, it’s unclear if the demands of an MLB bench coach is something that would detour Holliday from wanting to pursue the position.
But… if he does, there’s no doubt he would fit right in with the team as he has a close relationship with SP Adam Wainwright, 3B Nolan Arenado & both the staff/front office.

Holliday’s accolades include:
World Series champion (2011)
4× Silver Slugger Award (2006–2008, 2010)
NL batting champion (2007)
NL RBI leader (2007)
What say you from a fan perspective on whether or not you’d like to see Matt Holliday become the bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals next season. Sound off in the comments, we’d like to hear your opinions.
